PAGOSA SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Archuleta County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) announced mandatory evacuations Sunday. The affected areas include low-lying areas along the San Juan, Rio Blanco, Navajo, and Piedra Rivers.

For those able to evacuate, officials said do not wait for flood waters to rise, leave immediately.

For residents not under evacuation orders, officials said they should stay home and avoid all non-essential travel.

According to the ACSO:

Everyone under a mandatory evacuation order but not able to evacuate, we are asking you to shelter in place.

  • Stay home for the duration of the storm.
  • No non-essential travel.
  • Do not go out to check rivers, roads, or property.
  • Follow official sources of information for current updates.
  • Keep roadways clear for emergency responders and public works crews.

There are traffic control points from the ASCO along Highway 160 at Highway 84, 14th Street, County Road 119, County Road 500 at the radio station, Hurt Lane, and Oakridge Drive.

Drivers are reminded to never drive through floodwaters. Stay away from rivers, creeks, and drainage areas. The ASCO also reminds people to not try and rescue people themselves, and instead call 911.

The ASCO is expecting flooding through Monday, and have predicted the San Juan River could crest "at approximately 22 feet [Sunday]."

They also said they are aware cell service is being affected in Archuleta County and local 911 calls are being routed to Durango Dispatch. They suggest enabling Wi-Fi calling in your phone's settings if you are able to.
